Stories where the same day happens repeatedly has been done in films like "Groundhog Day" and "Donnie Darko." According to Dual Shockers, the creator did state these films have been major influences and "Mars Underground" is also emulating 16-Bit SNES RPGs and LucasArts adventure games.

One of the main goals of the game is to discover what is really going on and achieve one of the title's multiple endings. The game does utilize the same graphical style as SNES classics like "Earthbound" and "Chrono Trigger" but its style of gameplay emulates adventure games like "The Secret of Monkey Island."
