Chris Hero is one of the best independent wrestlers at the moment and he is reportedly WWE bound once again. However, the question is what role will he play when he comes back? Will he get assigned to NXT or will he go straight up to the main roster?
Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer (subscription required) first reported that Hero was coming back to the WWE. He noted that he has agreed to a new deal but there was still a pending physical. He already passed the medical and he is set to return to the WWE.
It should be noted that Hero performed at NXT under the name Kassius Ohno. However, he got released in 2013 due to the fact that he cannot maintain his weight. He also did not commit to the company's conditioning and dieting plans for him.
After his release from the WWE, Hero returned to the independent circuit. He continued to be in bad shape but he was still performing at a high level. Daily Wrestling News reported that the 37-year-old already said goodbye to PWG and he was sorry that his return to the WWE was leaked online.
Now, the question is what role will Hero play in the WWE? According to Cageside Seats, "The Knockout Artist" is set to replace Samoa Joe in NXT. He would bring star power to the developmental brand as several NXT stars are expected to be called up next year.
The worry about Hero is still his weight but with superstars like Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens looking out of shape, it is not difficult for him to get signed. He just has to maintain his weight and improve his look down at NXT.
As for his character, Hero might not come back as the Kassius Ohno gimmick. It was given to him for the KO initials but since he was released, it was given to Owens instead. The KO initials have worked for the current Universal champion.
Hero can comeback using the "Chris Hero" name since he's more known for it. Other independent stars have retained their names like Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles.
