"Mass Effect 2" is often regarded as one of the best games from the past generation and the PC port is currently being offered for free on the EA Origin digital distribution platform. It has been included in the platform's "On the House" promotion which means it will be free for the whole month of January.

The game is known for its dramatic opening sequence, which sees Commander Shepard die aboard the Normandy. Shepard does get back and agrees to work alongside the mysterious Cerberus. A majority of the game also focuses on Shepard recruiting his squadmates, travelling from planet to planet to fulfil personal quests.

"Mass Effect: Andromeda," the newest title in the franchise, will follow the events involving colonists which headed to the Andromeda Galaxy. They began their journey to their new home in "Mass Effect 2," Eurogamer reported. Their journey is separate from the events that unfolded in "Mass Effect 3."

"Mass Effect 2" is also available on Amazon for $3.97, shipping excluded. The game is also available on Steam for $20.

It is noted that while the game is free on EA Origin, gamers are required to have a paid Origin account. Those who already have an active account can get the game for free and this would be the most viable option compared to the paid options like the aforementioned copies on Steam and Amazon.

The game can also be played on the Xbox One due to the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility program, Game Rant reported. During N7 Day last year, EA and Bioware launched all three of the "Mass Effect" games for the Backwards Compatibility program. No HD remaster of the original trilogy is currently planned.

With a free copy of "Mass Effect 2" now available, gamers are encouraged to revisit the original series before "Mass Effect: Andromeda" launches in May. The original launch trailer for "Mass Effect 2" can be viewed below:
