U.S. President-elect Donald Trump once again dismissed the media as "fake" through a Twitter post. The post was allegedly in response to Meryl Streep's call at the Golden Globes to support free press that will "safeguard the truth."
At the Golden Globes ceremony held on Jan. 8, the award-winning actress gave a controversial speech when she accepted the honorary Cecil B. De Millie Award, where she took sharp aim at the billionaire-turned-U.S. president without directly mentioning his name. Her passionate speech made mention of a "performance," where a certain person asking to sit in the highest seat in the country imitated a disabled reporter and succeeded in outranking him in privilege, power and capacity to fight back.
According to the actress, there was nothing good about the "performance" but it sank its hook into her heart because it was effective in drawing laughter from the audience. By saying that, Streep referenced Trump's previous mocking of a handicapped New York Times reporter named Serge F. Kovaleski, People reported.
"Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose," the actress said before inviting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to protect journalists. Streep said they needed the principal press to hold power and to call them for every outrage. The actress went on to urge the Hollywood Foreign Press and everyone in the community to join her in backing the Committee to Protect Journalists, saying they would need them going forward and they needed them to protect the truth.
Shortly after the passionate speech, Trump posted on Twitter and criticized the "dishonest media" for not reporting on his promised Mexican wall in a way that would please him. In his tweet, Trump said, "Dishonest media says Mexico won't be paying for the wall if they pay a little later so the wall can be built more quickly. Media is fake!"
The president-elect allegedly referred to the media reports that came out last week, in which he stated that any amount spent on building the wall would be paid back by Mexico later. He previously made the wall one of his signature campaign issues and repeatedly emphasized that Mexico would pay for the border. Trump also called Streep overrated and denied her allegations that he mocked a disabled reporter, Bustle reported.
