Sony may finally be releasing its top of the line devices that features Organic Light Emitting Diodes or OLED displays. The Japanese firm has so far only used LCD panels for its smartphones although this OLED display is set to change either in 2018 or 2019.

The plans of Sony Mobile to introduce an Xperia smartphone sporting an OLED display are underway, Japanese publication Nikkan reported. The OLED display is a flat light emitting technology, made by placing a series of organic thin films between two conductors. This will be the very first Xperia handset to feature an OLED screen.

The Korean manufacturer has been using OLED panels in its Galaxy S and Note devices for a number of years now. So far, this has been a standout move for those devices, at least compared to Sony's, GSMArena reported.

Nikkan points out that this new OLED-equipped Xperia will be a top of the line model. The publication adds that Sony wants to "differentiate it from other competitors." Some of the added features will be as enhanced processor performance and superior battery life.

The 2018 flagship phones by Sony will see the tech giant join Apple Technology Company who is rumored to jump aboard the OLED journey this year. With this, Sony phones will most likely not feature the technology. Sony, just like Apple, has also been relying on the use of LCDs.

OLED displays which are widely used by Samsung have meaningful advantages over LCD ones. OLED displays have higher contrast ratios, thinner and more flexible. Apple is expected to use OLED screens for the first time on at least one of its upcoming iPhone gadgets later this year.

Hence, it is not a surprise to hear Sony's intentions to launch smartphones using this display technology. It is not yet clear who will provide the OLED panels to Sony or if the company is be interested in making it themselves.

Meanwhile, Sony has somewhat been reduced their focus on their smartphones. In 2016, the firm revealed its intentions to pull out of certain markets such as China, India and the United States.
