"Game of Thrones" Season 8 is definitely happening despite no green light yet from HBO. There have been many speculations, including the length of Season 8, which is expected to be the farewell season.
Although it has been announced that "Game of Thrones" Season 8 will be consisting of eight episodes, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys revealed that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are still unsure of how long the upcoming season will run. Nevertheless, he assured that there is no need to worry about the fate of Season 8.
"The only thing we're working out is how many episodes they want to do," Bloys told TVLine. "They're still figuring it out because I think they're trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show."
Bloys admitted that he is hoping for more than six episodes of "Game of Thrones" Season 8. In April 2016, Benioff and Weiss announced that Season 8 would likely have six episodes.
At present, HBO is searching for writers to replace Benioff and Weiss for the planned "Game of Thrones" prequel. The showrunners have declined their participation in a planned extension of "Game of Thrones" such as the prequel series.
In November 2016, Bloys and HBO's CEO Richard Plepler confirmed that preliminary talks are happening in the probable prequel series. Bloys dished that they are focusing on giving "Game of Thrones" Season 8 an exciting ending.
Aside from the speculations about Season 8 and a possible prequel, there are also talks about a possible "Game of Thrones" movie. In 2014, George RR Martin, the author of "A Song of Ice and Fire" on which the HBO fantasy series was based revealed that he has been negotiating about a possible movie after the series wraps up.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin revealed that he has been discussing for a probable movie project that would follow the main series final season, which is the "Game of Thrones" Season 8. During that time, he reiterated that the only issue was how long the season will run.
