"The Flash" has had many important characters come and go, making heroic sacrifices in order to save the day. Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) is arguably the first one to do so, sacrificing himself to wipe Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher) out of existence. Cosnett has now confirmed that he will be reprising the role in Season 3.

Cosnett tweeted the announcement but gave no further details. It is widely speculated that this version of Eddie may not have died due to the events of the "Flashpoint" event or could be from different universes like Earth-2.

The "Flashpoint" event and the "Invasion" crossover stories did impact "The Flash" in many ways, Screen Rant reported. One of the most relevant changes is the death of Cisco Ramon's (Carlos Valdes) brother. There is the possibility that Eddie's return could be a consequence of either plot device.

Cosnett's tweet also states he is returning to the show but does not specifically mention Eddie Thawne. This would indicate he may be playing a different character, such as Eddie's distant relative or a version of Eddie from Earth-3 and beyond.

There is also the possibility of Eddie only appearing in a flashback or in a hallucination, Cinema Blend reported. Hallucinations have been used to bring back dead characters before, particularly in "Arrow."

With Eddie returning, there is the possibility of the character interfering with the relationship growing between Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton). Eddie was Iris' fiancé before he sacrificed himself and may want to pick up where they left off.

It is still uncertain at this point regarding which episode Eddie will be seen in. However, Cosnett's tweet does reveal it will be an episode directed by siblings Spencer A. Harvey and Lloyd Harvey.

"The Flash" Season 3 is currently in its midseason break. The show will return with Episode 10 this Jan. 24. The official promo for the midseason premiere can be viewed below:
