The Freeform series "Shadowhunters" Season 2 recently featured a story development that veered away from its source material namely Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instruments" book series. Given Jocelyn's (Maxim Roy) death, Clary (Katherine McNamara) will do everything in her power to get her mother back even if it involved dark magic.

"Shadowhunters" Season 2 claimed the life of a beloved character when a demon attack led to Jocelyn's demise. Aired on Jan. 23, Monday, episode 4 titled "Day of Wrath" demonstrated Valentine's (Alan van Sprang) power over the demons as he sent one to the Institute to wreak havoc on his enemies.

The said attack injured many people and killed several Shadowhunters including Clary's mother. Given the story development, avid "Mortal Instruments" fans were shocked since Jocelyn is still alive in Clare's novels.

However, showrunner Todd Slavkin told TVLine that the said plot twist was a necessary story element to further develop Clary's arc in the Freeform series. Describing Jocelyn's death as a "really powerful" event in Clary's journey to become a hero, the situation will push the said character to learn more about herself, as well as realize her full potential and abilities.

Meanwhile, Slavkin also revealed that they consulted Clare about killing Jocelyn before deciding to introduce the said twist to the Freeform series. Despite apprehensions that making the change will profoundly mess with the books' storyline, Clare approved the said plot twist and found it a "cool way" to convey Clary's hero journey.

In other news, the upcoming "Shadowhunters" Season 2 episode 5 titled "Dust and Shadows" will feature Clary's plans to bring her dead mother back to life. A teaser clip posted on Spoilers Guide showed a conversation between Clary and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) where the latter warned her not to proceed with her plans.

Desperate to reunite with Jocelyn, Clary chooses to ignore Jace's warning that she might be bringing back someone or something different. Partnering with a woman who knows how to resurrect Jocelyn, the spell goes horribly wrong as Jocelyn's body is transformed into a monster-like creature.

"Shadowhunters" Season 2 episode 5 will be released on Jan. 30, Monday, on Freeform. Watch the teaser clip below:
