The story of "Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale" will take place in the year 2026, four years after the Sword Art Online incident as Kirito, Asuna and the rest of their friends embark on a new adventure in the new VRMMORPG called "Ordinal Scale".

Gamers can play "Ordinal Scale" by the used of a new virtual reality device called "Augma", as the design looks like a pair of small earphones, although in terms of size and portability, it is far superior to the existing VR machine “Atmusphere”.

Augma does not have a full-dive function from the previous devices, however, its AR function is greatly enhanced to compensate for it. It can transmit visual, audio and tactual sensation data to players while they are awake, thus enabling the users to enjoy fitness and health management like a game.

In "Ordinal Scale", players can raise their rank by collecting items that appear in various places in the real world and by defeating monsters. The ranking system features of the game are indicated by an ordinal number instead of a cardinal number. This resulted in high ranking players having overwhelming power and often rank has become a major factor in deciding the outcome of a PvP battle.

However, a new threat looms around in "Ordinal Scale" and it is up to Kirito, Asuna and the rest of the gang to stop it and prevent another "SAO" incident once more.

With the "Ordinal Scale" launching next month, anime fans are wondering if the film could set up events leading to "SAO" season 3?

Anime producer Shinichiro Kashiwada stated that he would like to 'SAO' characters featured in the "Alicization" arc in "SAO" season 3 since the storyline has not yet incorporated in the anime show.

However, Kashiwada also mentioned the "Progressive" novels, which he feels he could also be used in season 3, hence anime fans will likely see both stories within the show.

Aside from the possible season 3, there is also a chance the season 3 could be in the works after the live-action "Sword Art Online" series The Hollywood Reporter reported.

For now, anime fans will get to see more Kirito and Asuna action in "Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale" film next month as anime fans are looking forward to hear more news and updates for "Sword Art Online" season 3 and the live-action "SAO" this year.

"Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale" will premier on Feb. 18.
