Thousands of Chinese netizens gave their support to Chinese actress Ma Li who shared about a sexual harassment incident that occurred at a Shenzhen supermarket. The star of the 2015 film “Goodbye Mr. Loser” posted on Weibo on March 5 that a man grabbed her buttocks.
Ma Li wrote that she considered just letting the incident pass but decided to instead complain. The actress explained, “If I didn’t speak out, who knows how many women this kind of pervert would continue to harass.”
No Evidence
She reported the incident to the supermarket security guard and they looked for a CCTV footage a proof. But it turned out that the corner where she was sexually harassed has no camera installed. The man she accused of grabbing her behind denied doing it and because of lack of CCTV footage as proof, the man was allowed to go with no charges filed against him, Thatsmag reported.
As a result of the man being allowed to go with no charges, Ma Li said that she is very angry and helpless “because this kind of person is too common, most females would choose silence, but I don’t want to be silent.” Two days after she posted on Weibo, her post has gotten more than 250,000 likes. It is also ironic that the incident happened very close to International Women’s Day on March 8.
Anti-Defamation Law
Among the celebrities who supported Ma Li is Pan Changjiang, an actor and director, who said it is right for the actress to speak. He called her very brave and added 50 thumbs-up emoji to his post. But Ma Li could be in legal trouble because she posted online a photo of the man whom she claimed touched her body inappropriately. She could have breached the anti-defamation law on how easy it is to identify the man who eyes she just covered with a blue and white bar.
