Most of the focus at this point of the season has been on the Top 25 rankings and the fact that no team seems to be running away with the number 1 overall ranking. The Top 25 has also been changing in a big way every single week as some of the top teams continue to get upset.

There have been a few big NCAA stories that have happened over the last few days, and those news stories can have a big impact on how things are set to play out in March. If you are going to be successful when betting on March Madness, then you always have to be checking out the news stories and figuring out how that news impacts the potential games.

Davis Chasing Down Pistol Pete

Pete "Pistol" Maravich put up 3,667 points during his three years at LSU to set the all-time scoring mark in college basketball. That number has been viewed as an unbreakable record when it comes to college basketball, but that could actually be threatened this year for the first time in history.

Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis now has his sights set on trying to track down the record set by "Pistol Pete," but he still has a ton of work to do. Davis just recently moved into second place on the all-time scoring list as he has now scored 3,274 career points.

Freeman Williams had been in second place on the all-time scoring leaders list, but the former Portland State star is now at number three on the list. It's still going to take a huge season for Davis to catch Maravich, but it is now on the table.

It would take over 35 points per game for Davis over the final 11 regular season games to catch Maravich. This was a story that wasn't on the radar of anyone to begin the year, but Davis is now looking to break a record that was once nearly impossible to achieve.

Smith Released From the Hospital

In the NC State Wolfpack loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels over the weekend, there was a scary moment involving one of the biggest stars. Terquavion Smith had a scary fall during the game, and he was immediately transported to the hospital.

When Smith first went down, he expressed numbness in his right arm, and also complained of neck and elbow pain. A stretcher was called out to the court to take him away, but X-Rays were all negative when he arrived at the hospital.

Smith is expected to be a first-round NBA Draft pick, and this injury is one that will be watched by NBA teams moving forward. It's unclear when he will be able to return to the court on a full-time basis, but the Wolfpack are going to need him moving forward.

North Carolina player Leaky Black was given a flagrant 2 foul for committing the foul that injured Smith. It was a scary moment inside the arena, but it does appear as if Smith will make a full recovery.

Brey Set to Retire

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to have a new head coach starting next season as head coach Mike Brey is going to step down at the end of the season. Brey announced his decision earlier this week, and he will end a 23-year career with the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame is mostly known as a football school, but Brey has guided the Fighting Irish to a ton of success on the basketball court. Brey has guided the Fighting Irish to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, but they have yet to make an appearance in the Final Four.

Notre Dame was back in the NCAA Tournament a season ago after missing it for six straight seasons. The Fighting Irish all won two NCAA Tournament games last year despite playing in the First Four.
