The 5th edition of the Beijing International Film Festival has gathered 930 global movies to vie for the coveted Tiantan Award, organizers announced on Thursday.
As reported by state-run Xinhua, the film festival, which is slated on April 16-23, will have over 900 participating films from 90 countries and regions across the world.
The Tiantan Award includes 10 awards, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Feature Film and Best Music.
The critically acclaimed French director Luc Besson will chair the jury of the Tiantan Award. The panel will also include Robert Mark Kamen of the United States, South Korea's Kim Ki-duk, Russia's Fyodor Bondarchuk, Hong Kong's Peter Chan, Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles and Chinese actress Zhou Xun.
Meanwhile, Marco Muller, the previous artistic director of the Rome, Venice and Locarno Film Festivals, will serve as this year's Beijing International Film Festival chief adviser.
The film fest organizers also revealed that in addition to the 930 films, 1,531 motion pictures from 103 countries have registered for the Beijing Film Panaroma, an event included in the festival's program.
The international film festival was first held in April of 2011. Its mission is to be a "large international, professional, innovative, high-end and market-oriented film event" where simultaneously, Chinese filmmakers can integrate their works with the global film community.
The Beijing International Film Festival is co-hosted by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and the General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China.
The annual event is organized by the Film Bureau of the General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China and by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio, Film and Television.
