Facebook is reportedly planning to introduce support for third-party apps and several other new features. More details are expected to be revealed at the F8 Developer Conference in San Francisco in the next few days.

Various sources have said that the social networking giant will be unveiling around 20 of its supported third-party services that are expected to be integrated with its Messenger app. It is also expected that the support will most likely expand to a greater number of developers after the initial reveal.

Facebook's move comes after it decided to make Messenger a standalone app in 2014, according to IBN Live.

Many have been against the decision of separating the chat feature from its Facebook app. However, the social network giant stood by its choice.

Since users could not send messages on the initial app, many have chosen to download Messenger in order to fully enjoy the social network.

As of November 2014, more than 500 million users downloaded the messaging app. The figure is now close to the 745 million users of Facebook's mobile app.

Moreover, the Menlo Park company is planning to expand the reaches of the app more. For instance, it recently unveiled a payment feature where friends can send money through the app, according to Mashable.

Some are speculating that Facebook is following the steps of other successful messaging apps such as Line and WeChat, which already has support for third-party services.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to shed light on the news at its F8 conference this week.
