There is a high probability that the NFL extra points rule will go through some significant changes in the league's 2015 season.
Extra points are dull and need to be revived.
In a meeting on Wednesday, the team owner showed overwhelming interest in getting the extra points rule changed. However, there was no vote scheduled for this in that meeting.
"There's a clear movement to wanting to change and change it this year," said Rich McKay, co-chairman of the NFL competition committee
The issue will be one of the major focal points of discussion in meeting that are held next. There are clues that the league's organizers are considering this very seriously.
The competition committee will "develop alternatives and be ready for a potential vote" in two months in San Francisco. And, that will definitely get immense response from all the team owners.
The committee spent almost an hour discussing about the extra points rule on Wednesday's meeting, held in Phoenix, according to the NFL Official Site.
The possible Changes
The owners discussed many probable variations to the extra points rule. Some of these include
- Bringing the scrimmage line back for PAT kicks.
- The ball being placed 1 1/2 yards out for a two-point conversion.
- Removing the PAT kicks completely.
- Introducing the rule for teams to run a play from scrimmage.
- Permitting the defense to score when the ball is turned over on a two-point try.
The rules are meant to be broken, and the ones mentioned above are the most susceptible to changes, according to SF Gate.
"It was a very good discussion, there was a clear sentiment that we want change this year," McKay said.
The rule changes have been on the cards for quite a long time, but the competition committee is probably looking at it very seriously now.
It is everyone's desire to see a more competitive and a livelier game. The competition committee is hell-bent for the change.
"And the charge to us as a competition committee was to come back with a recommended proposal, do it in the next 30 days, and give everyone a chance to look at it and vote on it," McKay added.
Wait for a more interest-enhancing league.
