It has been a trend for book-based films to adapt the final book as a two-part film, such as Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn," J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Suzanne Collin's "Mockingjay," and Veronica Roth's "Allegiant." However, the case will be different in James Dashner's third book "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure," since its film will not be split into two parts.
The third and final installment of Dashner's "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" has a release date of Feb. 17, 2017 and will not be divided into two films, as per Exhibitor Relations.
The author also revealed that the second movie, "The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," will feature part of the plot from the third book, as per Movie Pilot.
The exact plot points that will be borrowed from the third book of Dashner's "The Maze Runner" trilogy have to be revealed yet; however, it is an assumed reason why the third book will be adapted into a single film.
Meanwhile, Dashner's prequel "The Kill Order" and the upcoming prequel "The Fever Code" in 2016 can be adapted by Fox to extend the film franchise. However, the franchise is composed to present "The Death Cure" with a single film in 2017.
Wes Ball's "The Maze Runner" has grossed an estimate of $370 million worldwide since its release on Sept. 19, 2014. Its success is to be followed by the upcoming second film "The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials," which is to premiere this year.
The second film "The Scorch Trials" stars Dylen O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Aidan Gillen, and Barry Pepper.
Directed by Ball, the upcoming second film will be co-produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Joe Hartwick Jr., and Lee Stollman. T.S. Nowlin is on board to pen the screenplay.
"The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Sept. 18 while "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" will be released on Feb. 17, 2017.
