The person arrested on April 19, Sunday night at around 10:25 p.m. for climbing the White House fence had a suspicious package in his possession.

Secret Service spokesman Brain Leary stated that the intruder was taken into custody by uniformed officials immediately, Fox News reported.

The person's name and gender have not been released yet, charges are also pending. After the examination of the package, it was found to be harmless. The reasons for the fence scaling incident are still not known, according to International Business Times.

The Secret Service has come under a lot of pressure in the recent months due security lapses and embarrassing incidents which have occurred. In September 2014, a man jumped through the fence and entered the presidential resident, he had a knife in his possession.

In October 2014, another fence scaling incident took place but the intruder was subdued by secret service dogs. Following these incidents a second barrier was raised in the premises.

Another incident which tarnished the reputation of the Secret Service occurred when two agents Secret Service agents drove a government car near a bomb investigation site at the White House after they consumed alcohol at a nearby party.

Congress members have criticized the agency for the incident in which a Florida man piloted a gyrocopter on the west lawn of the United States Capitol that occurred last week.

The current barrier surrounding the White House is eight feet tall, officials stated that until a permanent barrier is constructed they will add steel spikes on the fences to discourage people from scaling the fence.
