Patrick Dempsey, 49, has spoken about the death of his "Grey's Anatomy" character Dr. Derek Shepherd during the episode of the medical drama series' 11th season titled "How To Save A Life" despite the two-year contract extension the actor signed in 2014.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dempsey teared up as he described working with Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey, as a beautiful magic and they like a married couple.

"It's 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning," Dempsey said. "(There was) chemistry right away."

Dempsey also took to Twitter to thanks his fans. On April 24, Friday, he tweeted, "I want to thank all the fans, what an incredible 11 yrs, I love you all."

"Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode 21 shocked fans with the death of Dr. Derek Shepherd, also known as McDreamy, after surviving a shooting, a plane crash and losing several friends and colleagues.

The episode aired on April 23, Thursday, opened with Dr. Meredith Grey looking out at police lights flashing in her driveway, remembering her last words with Dr. Derek Shepherd, which are, "Stay here, don't move, wait for me. I'll be back before you know it."

With a solemn version of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," "Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode 21 ended with Dr. Meredith Grey reminiscing all the memories she had with Dr. Derek Shepherd including their first night together, the proposal, and the time they spend with their children, among others.

In a statement from obtained by Just Jared, "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes said Dr. Derek Shepherd "is and will always be an incredibly important character" for the fans, for her and for Dr. Meredith Grey and she "absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy."
