Famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin claimed the exploration of Mars would be cost effective if explorers are left on the red planet as settlers.

Aldrin expressed these views when he attended the Space Development Conference conducted by the National Space Society in Toronto over the weekend.

The event was the centre of attention in Canada which attracted individuals such as scientists, businessmen, students and educators from around the world to share their views on space and its future, according to Global News.

The former astronaut who worked for NASA, expressed views similar to those of the Mars One project, which entails human settlement on Mars by 2025.

The Mars One project is a private initiative headed by a non-profit which aims to make the mars settlement assignment a global initiative towards mankind's next biggest leap.

However, Aldrin's vision as he told the gathering of space curious attendees is to have individuals on Mars by 2035, but in batches which will continue in intervals, Global News reported.

The astronaut who has been vociferous about space exploration claimed the journey to mars will not be a race about who reaches first as it was in the 1960's but a collaborative attempt among many countries.

Scientists rallying support for Mars as the next frontier, were given a boost through Aldrin's book titled "Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration," which he authored together with space writer Leonard David.

The book launched in 2013, explores possibilities of settlements on Mars, and mankind's need to shift emphasis on revisiting the moon to collectively aiming to explore Mars as the next frontier.

The Apollo 11 astronaut quoted by media at the launch of his book claimed the investment made in the moon landing experience should not go to waste, but instead aid the first human beings to set foot on the red planet.
