Hewlett-Packard recently released a 3D scanner device that can be integrated into its Sprout PC platform. The device called 3D Capture Stage functions as an accurate 3D scanner and costs $299.
The circular 3D Capture Stage is installed just underneath the 3D camera on the Sprout PC's RealSense 3D camera. Installed at a 15 degrees angle, the device can rotate slowly thus allowing the Sprout PC to capture a maximum of eight different scans at a time that when combined can form a full 3D image, according to CIO.
The scanned 3D image can then be completely manipulated or edited via the Sprout PC's touch-sensitive Touch Mat surface. Once scanned, the object can be fully manipulated, remodeled, reshaped, cropped and colored. Once done, the object can be exported into Meshmixer or Microsoft's 3D Builder or any 3D printing software in preparation for 3D printing.
3D imaging is an exciting technology that can be used in various ways like product design and modelling. However, most of 3D imaging devices currently in the market are aimed at virtual and augmented reality with strong focus on the gaming aspect of technology, according to PC World. The Oculus Rift and Microsoft HoloLens is a prime example.
HP's new 3D Capture Stage is a very powerful piece of technology that has a very broad application. Unfortunately, the 3D Capture Stage only works if installed on HP's Sprout PC. The HP Sprout PC is currently priced at $1899 and many industry analyst consider this as a hefty investment.
The Sprout PC and 3D Capture Stage's price combined together can easily build a considerably powerful PC machine than can easily run the latest 3D modelling software and devices currently available in the market.
