Domestically developed nuclear technology is the next big step for China, according to the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). With the country’s own third-generation reactor designed by Hualong One technology, the country is expected to compete against other third-generation designs from the United States, Russia and France.
The plan was shared to the public at a promotional event held in Fuqing City, Fujian Province, on Tuesday, June 16. Around 200 experts from different countries such as Sudan, France, the Arab League and Britain attended the event.
Although China's nuclear technology still needs a bit of fine-tuning, the CNNC is optimistic that China will perform well in the lucrative global market for nuclear reactors.
"Hualong One is a fine example of China's innovation and is based on decades of experience in the nuclear industry," said Yu Peigen, deputy general manager of CNNC. He went on to say that the Hualong one "can fully meet international safety standards and third-generation nuclear power technology function demand."
For Yu, China's role in international cooperation will be bolstered by its nuclear capabilities.
Construction of 66 nuclear power reactors around the world is underway, and 24 of these reactors belong to China, according to Francois Morin, World Nuclear Association's China director. Morin believes that China is in the prime position to do well in the international market, as he believes that China is the engine of growth.
With the technology's successful performance in China, numerous business opportunities are expected to open up once Hualong One is open for international sales.
Construction of the pilot nuclear power plant in Fuqing City began in May.
