The organizing committee of Shanghai International Film Festival has published on June 17, Wednesday, the first report on the trend of Internet movies in China, recognizing the Internet as one of the most important sources of Chinese movies.

According to the report, at least 75.27 percent of Chinese film viewers decided to watch a movie because they have read the original network fiction, played a related online game, or watched animation through the Internet; 37.19 percent of them have showed willingness to see the movie.

The contents from the Internet also gave movie makers an opportunity to interact with fans before the movie is produced, which made it possible for the film production team to predict the box-office result more accurately and reduce the market risk, compared with traditional movies.

Internet movie blockbusters like "Old Boy: the Way of the Dragon," "Fleet of Time" and "You Are My Sunshine" were all adaptations of popular Internet literature or Web series.

Last year, different companies bought the copyright of 114 network novels, in which 90 works will be adapted into television dramas, while the rest will be adapted into movies.

Some companies were also reportedly rushing to find success and get instant benefits from Internet-based contents that most of the film and television companies purchase popular contents indiscriminately. But many films or TV series did not live up to the quality of the original works.

The Internet brought new trends to the traditional movie industry, the report said, which include the democratization of film production, mobility in film marketing, film distribution without intermediaries, diversification of film consumption, as well as convenience for the purchase of film derivatives.

The committee said that Internet users play a more important role in film production, especially in the preliminary step of content creation, financing, and the selection of the production team.

The committee sees crowdfunding and crowdsourcing to become the standard in film production in the future.
