Republic Wireless recently moved its unlimited data plan to the data breakage model which is similar to Google's Project Fi. They were previously offering the unlimited mobile data plans for the expensive phone segments.
According to Engadget, now with the data breakage norm Republic Wireless will be offering a Refund Plan which is the same with Google's new offering in the same segment. The new data plan by Republic starts at $10 per month, and any additional data usage beyond the cap will be calculated on prorate basis.
While customers are allowed to add data based on their usage, any unused data is also reimbursed to users at the end of the billing cycle. The wireless service provider will be offering some interesting add-ons where the customer will pay only $7.50 for 500MB and caps at $45 for 3GB.
The plans are already out in the market since Tuesday that allows consumers to pay for exact usage unlike unlimited plans. This makes life easier for many customers who have been using the conventional plans at higher rates for data buckets that would expire at the end of every month with unused data.
Republic's Senior VP of Product Management, Jon Schniepp told the Wall Street Journal "When people say they want an unlimited plan, they don't actually think they need an unlimited amount of gigabytes in any given month". They just want it to be simple with no surprises."
Google has recently launched a wireless service, Project Fi, that offers plans starting $20 a month and allots data at prorate basis for $10 per GB. They also refund any unused data to the customer. However, with Republic Wireless offering a cheaper option for its data plans, and with a customer base of 300,000, it threatens to alter the current industry norm completely.
