"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder is reportedly looking forward to exploring more of Damon's character now that Elena (Nina Dobrev) is no longer in the series. The actor hinted that Mystic Falls will no longer be the same sleepy town that fans got used to. It was said that the old Damon could return now that Elena is no longer around to reign him in.

According to MTV, Somerhalder shared that he is "very excited" to shoot the upcoming scenes in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 now that Dobrev's character is gone. He said that he is looking forward to what is going to happen next in Elena's absence.

Somerhalder hinted that the coming episodes will remind viewers of the earlier seasons when it comes to its storytelling. The publication hinted that without Elena, Damon could return to his ways and Stefan (Paul Wesley) would have to again pick up after his brother's mess.

According to Sugarscape, "TVD" viewers may have not seen the last of Elena just yet. Somerhalder praised the way the writers handled Dobrev's departure. He said that it was a brilliant idea that they did not opt to kill her just like any other character, which gives audience hope of her return.

When asked if he thinks Elena will be returning to Mystic Falls anytime soon, the actor said that there is always the possibility of her coming back. He claimed that she could resurface several years into the future but he refused to provide specific details.  

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 premieres on Oct. 8.
