Marvel and Disney film "Ant-Man" has proven the power of superhero tales in the box office yet again, holding the No. 1 spot with a $24.9million gross for the second weekend. In contrast, Adam Sandler's video game comedy "Pixels" has failed to meet expectations, grossing only $24million during its opening weekend.

While "Ant-Man" may not have been a smashing hit compared to recent Marvel installments, the superhero film has managed to pull in $106million domestically and $226.4million globally in its two-week run. Given its shooting budget of only $130million, the film's performance in the box office so far proves it to be another financial success for the studio.

On the other hand, "Pixels" has failed to reach the projected $30m mark on its debut at the United States box office. However, the sci-fi comedy film fared pretty well overseas, placing number one in 23 of 56 territories, according to Hollywood Reporter. Among the countries where the Sandler starrer soared high include Mexico ($3.7 million), Brazil ($3.1 million), Argentina ($2.3 million), Russia ($2.7 million), and Spain ($1.3 million).

Still for many box office analysts, "Pixels," a film that features the iconic 1980s arcade games such as Pac Man and Donkey Kong, is a considerable disappointment for an Adam Sandler-film. The Sony produced film was made for an estimated $88million, but total cost was reported to be $110million.

Not only did "Pixels" fail to secure the top spot at the domestic box office, it was also widely panned by critics. Because of its mediocre ratings and performance, the movie is said to be heading a rough road toward domestic profitability.

Meanwhile, boxing drama "Southpaw" started pretty strong at the box office, even surpassing the John Green novel adaptation, "Paper Towns." The sports film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays a boxing champ who experienced a tragedy and must fight his way back to the top. Despite its average reviews, "Southpaw" managed to rake in over 16million on its debut weekend.

Below is the list of the top 10 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters from July 24-26, featuring both its weekend gross and total gross, according to Rentrak estimates on July 27, Monday:
