The first waves of films were announced for the the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 10-20, has been announced on July 28.
Jean-Marc Vallée's "Demolition," a film starring Naomi Watts and Jake Gyllenhaal, from the Fox Searchlight Picture will open the 10-day event as reported by the Toronto Star. The movie is a co-production between Black Label Media and Mr. Mudd with John Malkovich and Lianne Halfon producing for their Mr. Mudd banner and Thad and Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith producing for Black Label Media.
The story revolves around a thriving investment banker's struggle after he lost his wife in a tragic car crash. He begins to introspect his life in a effort to find out where he went erroneous and is eventually salvaged by a woman he meets coincidently.
The purpose of the Toronto International Film Festival is to promote and encourage awareness, appreciation and understanding of the art of cinema. This years' edition includes two new sections called Platform and Primetime. First at Platform, 12 films will be screened in front of a jury, with the Best Film winning $25,000.
Film directors Claire Denis, Jia Zhangke and Agnieszka Holland have been selected as the jurors for the Platform section. Secondly at Primetime, six high-quality TV programs will be presented at the festival and will include public screenings and Q&A sessions with show creators.
The other highlights of the event include; "The Danish Girl," in which Eddie Redmayne will play a transgender woman "Freeheld," in which Julianne Moore and Ellen Page will feature as lesbian lovers. The festival will also showcase some the best thrillers, with the Whitey Bulger biopic, "Black Mass," starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Damon starring as a lost astronaut in "The Martian."
