The spoilers for Fairy Tail Chapter 450 are out and it's probably the most tragic chapter in the entire series!
The Chapter name "Alone in all the World" is as dire as the chapter itself as we begin to see a better picture of the curse that afflicts Mavis and Zeref. From Mangahere screenshots, here are the spoilers for Chapter 450.
Reflecting on Zeref's remark from the last chapter that Mavis "does not know how precious life is," this was because Mavis has yet to cause the death of someone else. Zeref was aware that Mavis shares the same curse as he does.
As Yuri's wife, Rita gives birth, they ask Mavis to name the baby, and she gives the name "Makarov." Mavis looks on at the newborn baby and begins to realize just how precious life really is.
Just like that, Rita dies and Mavis, realizing she is the inexplicable cause, runs away and exiles herself. She recalls Zeref's words-"the day you become aware, those around you will disappear.
So this is the contradiction: The more the cursed one (Mavis) realizes how precious life is, the more it will be taken away from her.
After a year, Zeref meets Mavis in the woods, and she tells him that she has not eaten for half a year but she would not die. Zeref confirms her immortality-even when her head is severed. The black mage confides that he has been wishing for death himself, but to no avail.
Zeref confesses that he has built a nation and also used dark magic to create the Etherias. He also wants to see his brother-but he also wants to break him into two. (Perhaps his way to avoid harm on his brother due to the curse).
In the final scene, Mavis hugs Zeref and they kiss..but as Zeref confesses his love for her..Mavis body becomes lifeless in his arms.
Did Zeref's strong feelings for Mavis overcome her immortality? What is keeping Mavis alive? Next chapter is "The Fairy Heart" and we may find answers then.
