Verizon has recently introduced a pilot version of its video mobile service Go90, which is a free mobile video-streaming service supported by advertisements.
A larger audience watching their premium content would then lead to a more successful ad business for Verizon. Profits from this app will be from data usage and advertising. Verizon could also benefit from this service from attracting new subscribers.
Verizon's Senior Vice President Brian Angiolet said that Go90 aims to encourage the young viewers, from 18 to 34 years old otherwise considered as the millennials, to rotate their phones by 90 degrees and watch videos is landscape. According to Asiaoutlookmag, Verizon is the first telecom player to compete with the titans Google and Facebook on this field.
Angiolet further said that millenials prefer to search the web when searching for something instead of finding it in a network or channel lineup.
President of Product Innovation and New Business at Verizon Marmi Walden said that 70 percent of millenials view on mobile first. Go90 is the perfect app for millenials in this sense, according to The New York Times.
Initially, the mobile app Go90 has been offered to select Verizon customers. Currently, the service is available to all users whether they are Verizon customers or not.
Go90 has between 100 and 200 hours of exclusive online content including live events, TV, original web series. This also includes shows from Comedy Central, ESPN, NFL Network, and Discovery to name a few. Popular series from AwesomenessTV and Machinima can also be viewed from go90.
Live concerts and games from the National Football League will also be featured by Go90. At the moment, this app is a mobile-first product, but on top of this, executives hope to expand streaming options to the national television.
Go90 is designed to enable users to share their online experience with friends and social media. Each user could setup a profile to personalize his viewing experience. The Go90 service will continually be updated with new shows and content.
