HBO has yet to confirm if "True Detective" will be renewed or cancelled for season 3. Following the mixed reception it received in season 2, many fans started to speculate that the series has been shelved.

Speaking to Variety, Cary Fukunaga shared that he failed to provide more creative input in the second season because there was a new feature director. He, however, explained that this has always been the plan all along. He shared that HBO wanted a miniseries with different directors coming in each season.

"True Detective" season 2 was helmed by multiple directors, guided by Nic Pizzolatto. Fukunaga remained as the show's executive producer. He, however, admitted that he did not have much involvement in its creative process.

"My involvement in the second season was as much or as little as they needed me. It turns out they didn't need me."

Fukunaga added that he has yet to speak to Pizzolatto after the Golden Globes in January.

Many fans were allegedly disappointed with season 2's storyline. Given that the first season received such stellar ratings, it did not come as a surprise that expectations were high. Unfortunately, the show failed to live up to the hype. The finale episode saw a decrease in viewership by almost 22 percent compared to last season's.

In spite of the lackluster performance of season 2, HBO is still open to doing a third season. Speaking to Zap2It, HBO president Michael Lombardo admitted that they are more than willing to continue the story if Pizzolatto is up for it.

Lombardo added that the finale episode was extremely satisfying despite what people say. He added that Pizzolatto has always been a "bold storyteller" and was never afraid to take risks.
