The developers behind VLC has announced that the cross-platform media player is coming to the Apple's latest fourth-generation Apple TV that features tvOS.

The media streaming app will be available from the dedicated App Store for Apple TV, with various apps and features that were not available previously on the older Apple TV. VLC is a cross-platform media player designed to support different audio and video file formats, with a function of streaming server.

VideoLAN lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf stated that there are codes for VLCKit that will be merged for the new tvOS and currently, the team is working on an official app for Apple TV. The team said that it is already in early stages and it will definitely support video playback, Ubergizmo reported.

Although the new Apple TV is set to comes out on October, the compatible VLC app will take some time to be released for the set-top box. Rivals of Apple TV like Amazon Fire TV and Android TV are already enjoying the benefit of VLC media and those who will choose Apple TV will be delighted to have the media streaming app on their set-top box.

In addition, popular media organization and streaming app Plex is also working with an app for Apple TV, according to Mac Rumors. Plex co-founder Scott Olechowski said that a tvOS version of Plex is in early stages of development as well. Plex is designed to access and organize digital media files on a number of device screens in the household, either locally or remotely. It is currently present in set-top boxes such as the Fire TV and Chromecast.

Another app that will be part of Apple TV is the Sling Media device that allows the cable subscribers tap cable TV programming from anywhere using an internet connection.
