Kate Middleton has a female bodyguard, and it is because her father-in-law Prince Charles wants it.

Middleton's main security officer is Emma Probert, who was assigned to the Duchess of Cambridge after she got engaged to Prince William in 2010.

Probert used to be an air hostess in the past. When Probert is on leave her place is taken by Karen Llewellyn.  Both the female guards carry a Glock pistol at all times. There is also another female guard to protect Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Reportedly a former member of SO14, the Scotland Yard unit in charge of the royal family's security, told the U.K. Express that after Middleton and Prince William's engagement, Prince Charles said that he wanted only a female guard for her protection.

According to the Starpulse, the royal family chose a female bodyguard because late Princess Diana was very close to her bodyguard Barry Albert Mannakee.

Mannakee was a police officer with the Royal Protection Squad and was assigned as a bodyguard to Princess of Wales in 1985. According to the book "Diana: The Last Word" by Simone Simmons, Mannakee instantly became Princess Diana's close friend in the royal circle.

Mannakee died in a road traffic accident in 1987 and the princess later alleged that he was killed due to his relationship with her so Prince Charles did not want the Duchess of Cambridge compromised in any way.

Speaking about Mannakee's accident, Princess Diana once said, "I think he was bumped off, but there we are."

Princess Diana believed someone had killed him because "he knew too much." NBC telecasted the video of Princess of Wales elucidating her relationship with Mannakee: "I was quite happy to give all this up. Just to go off and live with him. Can you believe it? And he kept saying he thought it was a good idea."

Ken Wharfe, Princess Diana's former bodyguard and one of three police officers to be made a member of the Royal Victorian Order after Princess Diana's death.

Wharfe is a former Metropolitan police inspector attached to SO14 Royalty Protection New Scotland Yard. From 1986 - 1994 he was the personal protection officer to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

"I've heard that Prince Charles is more involved in who is being appointed and if he asks for more women he will get more women," Wharfe said. "The trouble with Diana was she got on better with men. She did have a woman once, but she didn't last long. You have to have a good chemistry with the person you're looking after."

Wharfe also has written a controversial book revealing details about Diana's love life and cause her own death.
