Google Play Store increased the maximum APK size to 100 MB to deliver better user experience. It also improves packaging applications as the Play Store has wider range of application types and sizes.
Before, Google Play Store had a file size limit set for applications downloaded from the Play Store. This limit could have been circumvented with addition of up to few expansion files mostly two each of probably 2 GB in size. The previous accepted size of 50 MB and is now doubled to 100 MB for all devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Venture Beat reported.
The modification is apparently a formality because the quality restriction is definitely an artificial cap and the aim of the upgrade is to support richer apps and more graphics-intensive games. With this upgrade, the Google Play Store will support developers APKs up to 100 MB in size and users will only see a warning when any given app exceeds the 100 MB quota and makes use of Expansion files.
The update setting for users which is the default one will continue auto-updating apps over Wi-Fi only which will translate into users accessing higher quality apps and games while conserving their data usage.
Even though the developers can make bigger apps, Google does warn against developing apps that reach the 100 MB limit. Therefore, developers should keep in mind the mobile data connectivity and caps, app performance, and install times for users, Tech Times reported.
With the new limit set, designers can take shape of their APKs towards the size they should be before uploading them to Google Play Store. This change will not make Google Play Store APKs any bigger, it will simply make it a lesser hassle for designers to package them.
