A recently released update for the "Metal Solid V: The Phantom Pain" has raised questions among players as it introduced a type of insurance microtransactions. The update was rolled out ahead of the release of "Metal Gear Online" which is the multiplayer mode of "The Phantom Pain."

The 960MB update for "The Phantom Pain" adds the new feature called Forward Operating Base(FOB) insurance service. Players can avail of this new in-game service by paying real world cash.

In "Metal Gear Online," players are allowed to infiltrate other players' FOBs and steal resources and kill other players' base staff.

However, when players choose to purchase the FOB insurance service they can be assured that although their FOBs are still vulnerable to infiltration, their resources and staffs are covered by the insurance. According to Eurogamer, the attacking player will still keep the same amount resources and staff they have stolen.

Not covered by the insurance policy are resources and staff that players do not fully own. A good example are staffs that are being held prisoners in the Brig, wounded staff, staff deployed to defend the base when under attack and nuclear weapons. Staffs lost due to extraction or death will be compensated under the insurance policy.

On top of the new FOB insurance feature, the update also adds new event FOB missions. Konami posted the announcement on its official website and it reads, "In 'Event FOB' missions, there is no risk of retaliation (no defending player will invade your base later as revenge), so you can steal materials and abduct staff without fear of repercussions."
