The pitcher's mound was indeed a sight unlike any other, thanks to San Diego reliever Alex Torres who sported the first ever protective cap during the game last Saturday.

Approval of the said protective cap from Major League Baseball was back in January during the off season yet within the months that had passed it was only Torres who got to wear it for the very first time.

Torres wore the noticeable head piece as he pitched for an inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers that resulted in a 4-2 loss from two strike outs plus a run on two walks and a single.

There is much speculation on how the approved protective cap holds up during play as Brandon McCarthy had been vocal about being unsatisfied about it.

McCarthy back in 2012 underwent surgery after suffering from a hit on the head while pitching for the Oakland Athletics, so after the approval of the protective cap in January he was hopefully of the idea that it could be worn while in play.

Now pitching for the Arizona Daimondbacks, McCarthy seems to be less pleased with the outcome of the protective cap with comments that included - too itchy, too hot and too big.

Despite McCarthy's negative feedback, it seems that Torres could not care any less as he wore the protective cap that had front and side padding as he pitched last Saturday, which up to date is his 74th MLB appearance.

Reports have surfaced that the 26-year-old left hander Torres ordered the protective cap within the month and started using it for the past week.
