Asus has released a tool that helps user to unlock the bootloader on popular ZenFone 2 smartphone, allowing them to install custom ROMs.

Bootloader unlocking enables users to easily develop and install custom ROMs on the smartphones, and it is the first step in gaining root privileges. Before using the unlock tool, the device should be running software version 2.20.40.59 or later. The Unlock Device App from Asus can now be downloaded from the official Asus site.

Once loading the custom ROM on ZenFone 2, users will no longer receive software updates, Phone Arena reported. Asus says that users will not be able to return it to a locked condition, where manufacturer loses control over what users are installing on the phone.

The installation of the utility however, will void the warranty, and comes with the standard disclaimer that the company cannot be held responsible for any problems arising out of using the software. The company also provides a fairly detailed set of instructions on how to proceed with the installation, before downloading and installing the application.

According to NDTV Gadgets, unlocking the device has its own disadvantages such as: certain features and functionalities may be disabled, smartphone might stop functioning or can be physically damaged because of overheating, behavior of the device may be changed, device content may no longer be accessible or playable due to invalid DRM keys, and all user data, settings, and accounts may be wiped out.

Bootloader unlocking process may help Android handset to use its full potential, but Asus clearly states that it may not work the way users want it.
