The English and Chinese versions of Mark Osborne's "The Little Prince," which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, has recently hit local theaters.
Included in the 3D animated film's Chinese format are the voices of award-winning actor Huang Bo, who played the role of the Aviator, and popular actress Zhou Xun.
The film draws inspiration from a French novel of the same title.
Osborne, who also helmed "Kung Fu Panda," remarked that his movie is not a direct adaptation. The production team took elements from the novel but also injected an original narrative, which follows the story of a young girl who deals with an assertive mother.
The English edition of the film was top-billed by an all-star cast including James Franco, Rachel McAdams and Jeff Bridges.
Completing the cast are Marion Cotillard, Ricky Gervais, Paul Rudd, Albert Books, Benicio del Toro, Paul Giamatti, Bud Cort and Mackenzie Foy.
During its opening week in France, "The Little Prince" pulled in a total of $3.3 million. It debuted at number 2 in the local box office and was shown in over 700 screens.
After garnering $1.4 million from 830 screens in its second weekend, the film was able to achieve a two-weekend tally of $5.5 million.
The Antonie de Saint-Exupery novel, first published in 1943, has sold over 140 million copies and has been translated to at least 250 languages and dialects.
Since 1981, it has been published in more than 60 editions.
Osborne's "The Little Prince" is regarded as the first movie adaptation of the popular children's classic.
