Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation issued a recall order of more than 6.5 million cars, spanning all over the globe. The recall was issued in order to fix the issue with the cars' window switches that can short circuit and can cause fire.
In a statement, Toyota said that the window switch on the driver's side was recently discovered to be faulty. The company added that the problem is a high risk especially if the faulty window switch did not receive enough grease during the manufacturing process.
According to CNN, there is a possibility that if the windows did not receive the appropriate amount of grease, debris could accumulate at the electrical contact points. When this happens, it could cause the switch to short circuit, overheat and melt.
Toyota said that it has already received 11 reports of burnt doors due to the recently discovered problem. One report came from the United States and it involves a customer who suffered minor degree burn on their hands.
The recall will include 600,000 cars from Japan, 1.2 million cars from Europe and 2.7 million cars from North America.
Affected cars were manufactured between 2005 and 2010. Affected models include Toyota Yaris, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Matrix, Tundra, Highlander and Sequoia. The Scion xD and Scion xB car models are also included in the recall.
According to The Wall Street Journal, this is the fourth time since 2009 that Toyota recalled some of its cars due to faulty power window switches. All the power switches installed on Toyota cars are manufactured by Tokai Rika Co.
