A donation amounting to $20,000 was given to the Somalian government by the Chinese embassy in Somalia to aid in the relief efforts for the draught-affected people.
Abdulkader Abdi Farah, Somalia Prime Minister's Office Permanent Secretary, received the cash assistance from Chinese Ambassador Wei Hongtian in Mogadishu, the largest city in the country.
The Chinese ambassador said that the cash donation came from the embassy's staff. The donation was for the assistance of Somalian citizens who desperately need help.
Wei also mentioned that the Chinese embassy is always ready to help the people of Somalia, and that they will be extending all the assistance that the Chinese citizens and government can give.
Farah said that he is accepting the financial assistance with utmost respect. He also mentioned that China has been always one of the strong backers of both Somalia's citizens and its government.
"China always provides assistance in the time of need," said the secretary at the grant reception.
Farah expressed his gratitude to the Chinese people and government for the speedy aid. He also praised the efforts of the Chinese embassy to rekindle the diplomatic ties between China and Somalia.
With more than one million Somali citizens severely affected by the draught, the donation is timely for the humanitarian emergency.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked for the assistance of the international community for the Somali people in dire need of help. An intense famine is highly likely to be faced by the Somali people living in the southern regions, the secretary-general added.
