A renowned female Hollywood director takes on the challenge of handling the famous female superhero film "Wonder Woman."

Michelle MacLaren, the brain behind some popular television series such as the "Game of Thrones," "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad," is set to direct the "Wonder Woman" solo movie expected to be released in 2017.

The protagonist character will first make an appearance in the "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" film in the same year. Israeli actress Gal Gadot will play the role of the female protagonist, together with Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman.

MacLaren was known for her outstanding work in several episodes of "Breaking Bad," including the exemplary ones like "Salud," "One Minute," "4 Days Out" and "Gliding Over All."

Like most TV directors jumping into superhero movie productions, for MacLaren, "Wonder Woman" will be her first break on the big screen.

Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Charles Roven will be producing the DC Comics-based movie.

Also, MacLaren will be the first female director to film a superhero franchise after Lexi Alexander's "Punisher: War Zone," which cost one-fifth of "Wonder Woman's" production budget.

The "Wonder Woman" franchise has been in an on-and-off development with film production company, Warner Bros. Inc., with Joss Whedon being the last director to leave the project in 2007.

However, aside from MacLaren, the film studio has been meeting with other female directors like Jennifer Kent of the popular horror film "The Babadook," and "Homeland" director and co-executive producer Lesli Linka Glatter.

Even with 31 months away before the actual film comes out, fans are already raving about "Wonder Woman," with some even releasing fake movie posters and trailers.
