Microblogging platform and social networking website Tumblr announced that it is updating its service with a new feature that will allow its users to send instant messages to each other. The new feature will be presented on a threaded, one-on-one interface.

According to Pocket Lint, the new feature from Tumblr will be released for the iOS, Android and web version of its service.

There is one catch though. It is a limited launch and only 1,500 of Tumblr users will be able to use the feature right way. Tumblr said that any one of those who get the feature first, when they send a message to other people, the feature will be activated on the receiving person's profile. This sort of release will ultimately create a domino effect, which in theory will reach more people.

Tumblr plans to release the feature to all of its users by December.

The new instant messaging feature from Tumblr gives users the chance to engage in a private and threaded conversation with other users. The feature is located on the users' dashboard and sports a little smiley balloon icon. For Tumblr app users, they are required to update the app first before the feature will be activated.

While the new Tumblr instant messaging feature holds no significant threat to established instant messaging platform like Facebook Messenger, the new feature was still welcomed by dedicated Tumblr users and tech analysts alike.

Most users of Facebook Messenger are either related or have real-life connections. On the other hand, Tumblr users are mainly connected by interests like fandoms and creative outlets, according to Tech Crunch.
