Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm officially launched its next-generation system-on-chip, the Snapdragon 820. The company promises that the new chip will provide longer battery life and better signal.
The official specs of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 are no longer a secret in the tech community. Qualcomm has been busy in the past few months giving out hints and bits of information about its latest chip. On top of that are the regular doses of leaks and rumors.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is based on the 64-bit quad-core Kyro processor which is clocked at 2.2GHz. Qualcomm claims that it is twice as efficient as the Snapdragon 810 chip, which unfortunately suffered some serious overheating complaints. The company also claims that the new 820 chip offers 30 percent reduction in terms of power consumption.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 has an Adreno 530 GPU which the company claims is 40 percent more powerful than the Adreno 430 which is integrated in the Snapdragon 810 chip. This puts the Snapdragon 820 in a very good position to power virtual reality devices and support 4K Ultra HD display. With the Adreno 530, the chip can support cameras of up to 28 megapixels, according to Gizmodo.
Additional upgrades include the X12 LTE modem which promises download speeds of up to 600Mbps with upload speeds of up to 150Mbps. A new feature called TruSignal Antenna Boost promises strong signals and the chip also supports the new 802.11ad Wi-Fi standard, according to Engadget.
While the specs of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 are very interesting, analysts are still skeptical whether it is powerful enough to persuade manufacturers like Samsung and LG to return to its clients list.
