In an effort to revamp its reputation as a fattening fast-food chain, McDonald's will be taking out eight items on its menu starting in January.

Additionally, the famous fast-food giant will also axe five of its extra value meals, bringing the number down to 11 from 16.

In an investor meeting, McDonalds said that the move aims to speed up its service time.

"It helps operationally yes, but it simplifies the menu as well," McDonald's CEO Don Thompson said.

According to a spokeswoman from the fast-food chain,  McDonald's might bring down its number of quarter pounders on its from four down to one, snack wraps from three to one and premium chicken sandwiches from three to one.

However, no additional details were given regarding the remaining items to be taken out of McDonald's menu.

The new menu is currently being tested in Texas, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Knoxville and California, said the spokeswoman.

In addition to simplifying its 121-item menu, McDonald's is also implementing its new "Create Your Taste" program, where customers are allowed to pick out the ingredients on their sandwiches, to regain the fast-food's "burger leadership."

The fast-food giant is currently struggling to keep up with competition, including the fast-rising Chipotle Mexican Grill, in the industry as McDonald's company stock declined by 6 percent this year. McDonald's also reported that its restaurant sales in the U.S. dropped by 4.6 percent in November, which is its lowest in 14 years. Meanwhile, its global sales also fell by 2.2 percent in the same month.
