Installing your Xbox One or Playstation 4 with unauthorized third party software might seem to be fun, but the same could land you in trouble. According to the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, installing game consoles with third party software is considered illegal as the game regulators does not trust such third party software.

The US Library of Congress released an online order that provided exemptions to software download in smartphones, TV and even printers, yet the same time did not officially provide permission for download of software to game consoles. The statement made the fact clear that the rights were not provided for reasons that were related to piracy.

The Electronic Software Association made it clear that game consoles were exempted for that fact that jailbreaking would give chances for using stolen games. On the contrary, Teardown expert clarifies that console repairs could be easily done with the help of jailbreaking. ESA countered the statement by clarifying that game manufacturers would repair the console either for free or at a low cost.

Recent game consoles that are now available in the market are nothing short to computers. It can run apps, launch a browser, and even play games with heavy bandwidth, yet users are constantly reminded of the fact that game console is never theirs as the software control does not rest with them.

Meanhwile, Microsoft Xbox One will use Microsoft Windows 10 from this month, making it less likely for users to install any kind of third party software.
