In response to the government's demand to recall the driver's air bag in its cars, Ford Motors has added 447,000 vehicles to the list of the cars that need to implement the recall of the air bags' inflators.
Ford has announced that it will fulfill this demand in all the regions of United States. These inflators are manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp and can apparently explode with high force and spew shrapnel into drivers and the passengers of the car.
BMW and Chrysler car manufacturers are facing immense pressure now that one of the car giants has agreed to recall the airbags. These two companies are the only ones that are left to adhere to this policy. After the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the statement of demanding this recall to five automakers, Honda and Mazda took immediate actions to do so; followed by Ford.
Earlier, a similar kind of air bag recall was called for in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. But due to immense pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the five automakers are quickly taking the situation in their control and announcing the recalls.
In support of its demand for the recall of the air bags, NHTSA explains that the inflator propellant which is nothing but ammonium nitrate burns faster, if exposed to prolonged airborne moisture and hence that can result to an air bag explosion throwing the driver and the passengers of the car in to grave danger. The agency has announced the recall due to one accident and a few other instances in which the drivers' suffered injuries. Dealers are going to take the remedial efforts at zero cost to the owners.
Around 12 million vehicles are expected be affected due to the air bag recall drive before the end of this year.
