CPS Confirms Hoverboards Are Illegal To Ride On The Pavement And The Road (Photo : Getty Images)
The 26th precinct of the New York Police Department tweeted on Thursday to remind residents that it is illegal to use a self-balancing skateboard or hoverboard in the Big Apple. The state's Department of Motor Vehicles made the same warning.
The tweet, although it was subsequently deleted, cited relevant parts of the state law that bans the use of the hoverboard, reports Engadget. It specifically cites Title 9, Chapter 1, Subchapter 3, Section 19-176.2 of the New York Code.
The code prescribes a $500 penalty for violators. But first-time violators would not be fined yet, although second and subsequent breaches would have penalties, reports CNN. However, the figure it cites is lower, or not exceeding $50.
Authorities explain that the skateboard is classified as a "motorized scooter" or "electric personal assistive mobility devices" which propels people using power and not a motor vehicle that could be registered.
The skateboards are no. 1 on Amazon's Best Seller list despite the price tag that ranges from $200 to $2,000. The use by some celebrities, such as Lily Allen and Wiz Khalifa had contributed to their popularity. However, in the case of the rapper, it landed him in trouble with the law for using it inside the Los Angeles Airport despite being ordered by authorities to stop using it.
