After their separation, Sparks and ex-wife acknowledged that neither has a claim on the other's assets so they agreed that neither of them would seek alimony from the other.

The two first met when Sparks was in his senior year at Notre Dame. In October 2014, he revealed to GQ that he met Catherine on a Monday and told her "I will marry you" by Tuesday. They got married in 1989 and share five children, Miles, Ryan and Landon and twins Lexie and Savannah.

"Cathy and I have separated. This is of course not a decision we've made lightly. We remain close friends with deep respect for each other and love for our children. For our children's sake, we regard this as a private matter," the 49-year-old best-selling author confirmed to Us Weekly.

Aside from "The Notebook," Sparks' other best-selling novels adapted for the big screen include "A Walk To Remember," "The Last Song" and "The Best Of Me." His two novels "The Choice" and "The Longest Ride" being adapted for the big screen are currently filming.

Directed by Ross Katz with a screenplay written by Bryan Sipe, "The Choice" stars Maggie Grace, Alexandra Daddario, Teresa Palmer, Tom Welling, Tom Wilkinson, Benjamin Walker and Brad James among others.

"The Longest Ride" is directed by George Tillman Jr. and it stars Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson, Jack Huston, Oona Chaplin, Melissa Benoist, Alan Alda and Lolita Davidovich, among others.
