Jaycee Chan, son of Chinese kung fu star Jackie Chan, will face court trial on Friday for a drug-related crime, the Dongcheng District People's Court in Beijing announced.
The younger Chan was formally charged last month "with the crime of sheltering others to take drugs." He tested positive for marijuana and admitted to have taken the drug. He was arrested together with Taiwanese star Kai Ko in his Beijing home in August last year.
Ko was released after two weeks of administrative detention for drug use, while Chan was detained for the mentioned criminal offense, which is a more serious crime than just using.
Police seized more than 100 grams of marijuana from Chan's home.
Three years in prison is the maximum sentence for this crime, plus a fine to be determined by the court, according to Chinese law.
On another drug-related incident last year, the popular action-star said, "with regards to the incident involving my son Jaycee, I am very angry and shocked," on his official Sina Webo account.
"I told Jaycee: if you have done something wrong, you must bear the consequences. As your father, I am willing to face the road ahead with you," Jackie added.
He said that he felt "ashamed" and "sad" for what happened and hoped that his son would speak out about the dangerous effects of taking drugs. In 2009, he served as a goodwill spokesman for the China National Drug Committee.
The committee works on promoting anti-drug education especially among the youth.
