Director James Cameron voiced out that the pressure is on for his upcoming fantasy film "Avatar 2," which has to continue the triumph of its predecessor "Avatar," a global phenomenon in 2009.
In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron said that obviously, expectations were going to be very high on the "Avatar" films, especially on "Avatar 2," to make sure that it had not been just some big fluke the first time.
Cameron added that he and the crew had got to deliver. In fact, the filmmaker said that he had created a nice rod for his own back.
According to Cinema Blend, the only question is whether Cameron's "Avatar 2" can hold its weight after the appeal of the visual effects goes away, not to mention that the "Avatar" film franchise is also set to have "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4."
But since Cameron was the one who directed the first two "Terminator" films, it is assumed that he would be able to steer the franchise to a clearer, smoother path.
Set in the vibrany realm of Pandora, Cameron's "Avatar 2" follows the first "Avatar" film, which made nine Oscar nominations and earned more than $2.7 million on a global scale, setting a new record in a generation of 3-D blockbusters.
"Avatar 2" stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Salda, who reprise their roles as Jake Sully ad Neytiri, respectively. The sequel also stars Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.
With Cameron set to helm the film, "War of the World's" Josh Friedman and "Jurassic World's" Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are on board to write the film script. "Titanic" producer Jon Landau will co-produce the film with Cameron.
"Avatar 2" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Dec. 25, 2017. "Avatar 2" hits theaters in December 2018 while Avatar 4 premieres in 2019.
