An abandoned baby was saved by a long-haired tabby cat from dying from the cold.

The three-month-old baby boy that had been left in a box in a street in the city of Obinsk in western Russia was able to survive after the cat climbed in the box to keep him warm, according to Ruptly TV

The hero cat named Masha did not only keep the baby from freezing to death. It also cried out in order to alarm people and made them aware of the boy's presence, Washington Post reported.

Irina Lavrova, 68, was dumping garbage when she heard Masha meowing near the trash bins. She first saw Masha, which was all right, before she was surprised to see the baby boy lying next to the cat.

According to Lavrova, everyone takes turns in looking after Masha, a communal cat that is very placid and friendly. She said, when she heard Masha meowing, she thought the cat had injured herself because it normally would have come and said hello to her.

Lavrova added that the abandoned boy was well-dressed with a little hat and apparently, a few nappies and some baby food had been left by whoever left him in that box where Masha found him.

The baby boy was and declared healthy and fit after it was taken by ambulance to hospital where he was given a check-up. According to the hospital, he had only been in the street for a few hours and was not damaged by the experience thanks to his clothing and especially Masha.

Having hailed her a hero, Masha has been spoiled by the residents in the area who are very proud of her by giving her her favourite food while the police are searching for the baby boy's biological mother.
