Over half of all New Year's resolutions are to get into shape and remain healthy starting in January, which causes a big boost in gym memberships and group fitness classes. Following the season of family gatherings, holiday parties and big feasts, many people promise themselves to boost their health and fitness during the New Year. However, personal trainers have the difficult task of keeping motivated people in the gym until they meet their weight loss and fitness goals.

Beth Grove is an Omaha, Nebraska fitness trainer. She shared that many new gym members get frustrated when they see no major health and fitness improvements during the first month, according to KETV.

Grove explained that it is critical for the newly-motivated people to get through the first three months of their gym membership. That is when they can usually start seeing the health benefits of regular exercise.

Fitness experts also stress the importance of having a positive attitude. People might need to take a day off, change their workout routine, or even hire a personal trainer to stay on track.

However, some critics argue that the gym is not a wise place to do workouts. One of the main issues is that the cost is not limited to the gym membership itself, but also includes workout supplies including sneakers, clothing, and other items, according to Quartz.

Another potential problem is scheduling exercise around workdays. It can be challenging to finish workout sessions before going to the workplace, and at the end of the workday people often have little energy left after putting in an eight-hour day at their place of employment.
