The adoption rate for Windows 10 OS is twice that of Windows 8. As a result of Microsoft offering the software for free to Windows 7 and 8.1 users, the number of devices running on the OS reached 200 million in six months.

In comparison, for the same six-month period, there were only 100 million devices running on Windows 8. Microsoft announced on Monday the milestone, although in the last three months, adoption rate for Windows 10 slowed down to 90 million devices in contrast to 110 million for the first three months, reports Engadget.

Another milestone for the new OS is that in December, Windows 10 users spent over 11 billion hours using the OS. However, CNET points out that Windows 10 got a 9.96 percent share of all Web traffic generated by desktop operating systems in the last month of 2015, citing data from tracking firm NetMarketShare. It is slightly higher than the 9 percent registered in November. For the same month, users of Windows XP accounted for 10.9 percent, while it was 10.3 percent for Windows 8.1.

Besides those who downloaded the free OS on their devices, Windows 10 was also pre-installed in Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 laptops which added to the total number of users. With the device becoming available in 10 more countries, namely the UK, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, France, China, Austria and Australia, the numbers of users would like rise further in the coming months.
